Department: Mathematics & Statistics

Statistics is the science of learning from data, whether those data come from biology, economics, engineering, medicine, public health, psychology, marketing, sports, or education. The minor in applied statistics is an excellent complement to many majors on campus. Coursework focuses on the application of statistical ideas, specifically statistical inference and modeling. Students can choose electives that introduce statistical programming or theoretical foundations. Throughout the program, students will develop strong quantitative reasoning skills that are lucrative for many career paths, as well as graduate study.

Education: Biological Sciences Major, Chemistry Minor, Applied Statistics Minor

In what ways do you believe your Applied Statistics minor will compliment your Biology major?

I believe that a minor in statistics complements a biology major by enhancing skills in data analysis, experimental design, and biostatistics. It enables effective analysis and interpretation of biological data, aids in designing experiments, and provides knowledge of statistical methods specific to biology. The combination of a biology major with a statistics minor will open up research opportunities and increase competitiveness in the field of biological research. Especially for those who are pursuing a career in research, a strong statistical background would be a total advantage.

Have you been involved in any undergraduate experiences that utilized the knowledge you’ve learned in your statistics coursework?

  • Undergraduate research experiences may be available for students minoring in applied statistics. Perhaps you can apply data mining techniques on college basketball data or explore world swimming records. Connect your interest in biology or environmental science and investigate migratory data for Monarch butterflies or the impact of California wildfires on the insurance industry.
  • The Burkardt Consulting Center offers statistical support for research and publication to faculty and students at ÎÞÂëÇ¿¼é, as well as members of the surrounding community.  Our faculty and undergraduate student consultants work directly with those in other disciplines to aid in producing quality scholarly work for publication.
  • Students choosing to complete STA 360 for the minor are exposed to the statistical programming language SAS. This platform is used in analyzing data from clinical trials, as well as other industries. At the end of the course, students can earn the Base Programming Specialist credential from SAS. This credential is broadly recognized and gives students a competitive advantage as they enter the job market.
